JEFF Stoughton's new foursome came up a game short in their bid to win their first bonspiel.
Stoughton -- playing for the first time with Alberta's Kevin Park as his new third -- made it to the final of the McMillan Insurance Classic in Selkirk before falling 3-2 to Winnipeg's Peter Nicholls Monday night.
Nicholls earned $3,520 with the win, Stoughton settled for $2,520.
On the women's side, Kristy Jenion's new squad got their season off on a winning note with a 6-4 win in the women's final in Selkirk over Kaitlyn Lawes.
Jenion earned $3,520 while Lawes picked up $2,520.
Bingyu Wang exacts
revenge on Jones
JENNIFER Jones made a disappointing season debut on the cash spiel trail over the weekend, failing to qualify for the playoffs at a World Curling Tour event in Vernon, B.C.
Jones went 2-3 in the event, which was held in the same city where she won her world championship last spring. Among the teams that beat Jones were China's Bingyu Wang, who lost the world championship final to Jones last spring.
The event, won by Calgary's Shannon Kleibrink, was the first stop on what is a gruelling 11-event schedule for the Jones foursome this winter.
Their next stop is this coming weekend at a Grand Slam event in Calgary. Winnipeggers can get a look at the reigning world champions Oct. 24-27 at the Women's Classic at Fort Rouge Curling Club.
Fry doing fine at second with Gushue
RYAN Fry is finding his new surroundings profitable.
Fry helped Newfoundland's Brad Gushue defeat Switzerland's Ralph Stockli 6-4 in the final of the Swiss Cup in Switzerland last weekend.
Fry most recently played third for Jeff Stoughton, but he left the Stoughton team last spring when he got an offer to play second this season for Gushue, the 2006 Olympic gold medallist.
Lots of curling action on tap this weekend
THERE are three events this coming weekend on the Manitoba Curling Tour.
The Nott Autocorp Thanksgiving Charity Open will take place at the Thistle Curling Club, the Atkins Curling Supplies Women's Classic will be held at the Charleswood Curling Club and the most lucrative event of the weekend -- the $40,000 Manitoba Lotteries Stakes -- will be held at the Brandon Curling Club.
