AS one 16-year-old girl involved in a deadly March car crash was released on probation at the Law Courts Thursday, another was being denied bail in youth court for breaking the conditions of her release one too many times.
Court was told that the teen has been the subject of arrest warrants three times over the last year stemming from her flight from charges for allegedly participating in a "small-scale riot" and setting a dangerous fire in separate incidents at her group home last summer.
Crown attorney Danielle Simard said on May 20 last year, the 16-year-old and three other co-accused rampaged through their group home damaging property and frightening a social worker enough that he locked himself in an office and phoned police for assistance.
Less than a month later, the girl was charged with two counts of arson after she allegedly lit a mattress on fire while locked inside a "quiet room" at the same group home. The fire caused $50,000 in damage.
After being rescued from the home by firefighters, the girl ran from the scene and vanished for a month until eventually turning herself in to police. In both incidents, the teen was released on a promise to appear, but her failure to show up for court dates and violation of bail conditions has landed her back in custody three times since last September.
Defence lawyer Nolan Boucher promised that if released, the girl would abide by strict conditions.
But Provincial court Judge Heather Pullan ruled the girl will remain in custody at least until June 25, the date of her next court appearance.
