VANCOUVER -- Liberal Leader Stephane Dion says the economy requires speedy, decisive action and can't wait for Stephen Harper's stand-pat economic policy.
Dion says his plan to consult economists, bankers and regulators during the first 30 days of a Liberal government would "do everything" to protect savings, pensions, mortgages and jobs.
He says the federal government must play a major role in helping people during tough times.
The Liberal leader says he would direct the Finance Department to provide an economic update within three weeks of forming a government and summon first ministers to "address the new realities of Canada's economic situation."
Dion says he'd also consult with the provinces on infrastructure projects and manufacturing opportunities that would best stimulate the lagging economy.
He says Canada's strength lies in the ability of its leaders -- the prime minister and the premiers -- to work together.
"There is money ready," he said, "but the money is waiting for the photo op of Stephen Harper."
"We'll not wait. We'll work with premiers right away . . . because Canadians cannot wait; the economy cannot wait."
