SAN JOSE, Calif. — A day after signing veteran Rob Blake, the San Jose Sharks acquired defenceman Dan Boyle from the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday.
Former Tampa Bay Lightning Dan Boyle tries to steal the puck from Eric Perrin during a game in Atlanta on April 5. Boyle is headed to San Jose.
A source told The Canadian Press the deal was finalized Friday afternoon with an announcement soon expected.
Tampa sent Boyle and defenceman Brad Lukowich to the Sharks in exchange for a first-round draft pick in 2009, a fourth-round draft pick in 2010, defenceman Matt Carle and prospect Ty Wishart — a first-round pick in 2006.
Boyle has a no-trade clause and had to sign off on the deal. The 31-year-old has a US$40-million, six-year contract extension kicking in next season, a deal new Lightning owners Oren Koules and Len Barrie want to remove from their payroll.
The Sharks lost blue-liner Brian Campbell to free agency Tuesday but have acted fast to replace him, first signing the 38-year-old Blake to a $5-million, one-year deal on Thursday and now acquiring the swift-skating Boyle, one of the NHL’s premier puck movers.
