Fake U.S. bills circulating: police

Winnipeg police are warning counterfeit U.S. bills are showing up in the city. Police said U.S. $50 bills, in particular, are circulating.

Those passing the counterfiet bills appear to be making larger purchases using the fake currency and then, within a couple of days, returning the items for a Canadian cash refund, said Const. Jacqueline Chaput.

Chaput said that if a suspected counterfeit note is offered, inspect it closely and compare it to a known authentic bill if possible.

As a consumer, decline the note and request another form of change.

Try to obtain identification from the suspect and note a description of the suspect or vehicle plate information and notify police immediately.

Any information regarding suspected counterfeit notes or persons who may be in possession of them can be directed to the Commercial Crime Unit at 986-6231 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 786-8477.
