River East Collegiate's jazz band to compete in festival

For the fourth time since 2003, River East Collegiate's jazz band is the only Canadian group chosen to compete in a prestigious New York City jazz festival celebrating the music of Duke Ellington.

Jeff Kula and his 17 hep-cats will duke it out with 14 of America's top high school bands at the 13th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival, which takes place May 15-18 at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

The three-day event features workshops and jam sessions with members of the famed Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, who will serve as mentors for each of the finalist bands. On the final night, the top three bands will perform with Pulitzer Prize-winning jazz icon Wynton Marsalis, artistic director of the Jazz at Lincoln Center program.
