Katz signs 'Stop the Madness' petition Video available here

THE spouses of police officers involved in a shooting incident on Jubilee Avenue in December of 2006 are demanding Ottawa ensures violent criminals serve out maximum sentences and repeat offenders stay in jail.

Shelley Penner, Diane Murray and Linda Russell appeared at City Hall this morning to publicize their "Stop the Madness" petition, which has 2,000 signatures so far.

City councillor Brenda Leipsic signs Stop the Madness petition at city hall this morning. At back, left to right, are Police Chief Keith McCaskill, Mayor Sam Katz, Shelley Penner, Diane Murray and Linda Russell.

Mayor Sam Katz and seven city councillors signed the petition, which may be found at www.mts.net/~penz.

It reads: "We the undersigned are concerned citizens who demand criminals serve their maximum sentence handed down for violent crimes. We demand stricter sentencing is given to repeat offenders and the revolving door for criminals is closed. We demand the Minister of Justice focus more attention on the well-being and protection of law-abiding citizens."

Jeannine Kruger, who was not present at City Hall, also created the petition.

Winnipeg Police Service Constables Curtis Penner and Donald Murray were seriously injured in the December 2006 incident. Const. Jeremy Cull was also wounded.

The police officers’ spouses said they normally try not to think about what their husbands do for a living, but serious incidents such as the Jubilee shooting pressed them into action.
