THE cost of a new home in Winnipeg grew at one of the fastest clips in the country in March, according to new Statistics Canada figures released today.
The federal agency said new-home prices here were up one per cent from February and 15 per cent from a year earlier.
The month-over-month increase was the second largest among the 21 cities surveyed, while the year-over-year gain was third highest.
For the 11th straight month, Saskatoon recorded the biggest increase in new house prices, with a monthly escalation of 2.1 per cent and a yearly gain of a staggering 46.2 per cent.
Regina had the second biggest yearly increase at 27.8 per cent.
Nationally, the new-home prices were up 0.2 per cent from February and 6.1 per cent from March of last year, Statistics Canada said. The year-over-year growth rate was down slightly from February’s 6.2 per cent gain, making it the second straight month that the rate of growth had slowed.
Manitoba’s rate of growth accelerated from February, when the montly gain was 0.1 per cent and the year-over-year increase was 14.5 per cent.
